Duplicating Objects
To duplicate an object, select it and press Ctrl+D, or select Duplicate from the Edit menu. If multiple objects are selected, they are all duplicated. If an object which owns other objects is duplicated, the owned objects are also duplicated. The rules for resolving duplicate object names are as follows.
- When a single label or graphic form field is duplicated, the painter automatically generates a new field name for the duplicate form field. No notification is given. This is identical to the manner in which the add operation functions for these object types.
- When a single object which is not a label or graphic form field is duplicated, the name of the original object is inspected. If the name was automatically generated, then a new name is generated and the Duplicate <Object Type> dialog is presented. This new name can be accepted or changed as desired. If the name was not automatically generated, then the name of the original object is preserved in the Duplicate <Object Type> dialog. In this case, the name must be changed before the operation can be completed.
- When multiple objects are duplicated the painter automatically generates new names for each object and notifies the user that this was done.
- When a form object is duplicated, the names of the form fields that are also duplicated are preserved. This is because the names of form fields need only be unique within a form. Two forms can each own a form field with the same name.
All duplicate operations can be undone by clicking on the Undo icon in the tool bar.
